Safe Pets Program

The Naperville Area Humane Society offers a number of programs that help to differentiate us from many other animal sheltering and rescue organizations. One of those programs is our Safe Pets program.

Established in 1999, the Safe Pets program assists families in crisis, such as domestic violence, by offering space in our shelter to care for the family cats or dogs on a temporary basis. Through our Safe Pets program, pets are granted a temporary safe haven and families can begin putting the pieces of their lives back together.

We are limited on the number of Safe Pets we can help at one time and have recently partnered with BestyBnB to expand our resources in order to help more people and pets in need. If you have questions about the Safe Pets program, BestyBnB, or if you need Safe Pet assistance, please email admin@naperhumane.org

Naperville Area Humane Society and BestyBnB have partnered to create secure safe, temporary homes for pets during their owner’s time of crisis.

About BestyBnB

BestyBnB was born out of the Founders’ mission to keep pets and people safe, connected, and together. At BestyBnB we believe every heart deserves a safe and loving home.

It is the BestyBnB pledge to deliver a safe and loving temporary home for every Pet (Besty) in need of help and support. We do not take this responsibility lightly. In today’s world, everyone can use a little hope, healing, and happiness. Our promise is to provide organizations, pet parents, and pet caregivers cutting edge technology to create a better community for pets and people.

The BestyBnB team is comprised of a passionate group of pet-loving innovators, philanthropists, and caregivers, who work together hand-in-hand, heart-to-heart, to make this world a better place for pets and people.

BestyBnB’s mission is to ELIMINATE THESE BARRIERS:

50% of abuse victims who call an Emergency Hotline for HELP, end up NOT GOING because they CANNOT bring their pet(s).

  • Less than 5% of Domestic Violence Shelters can house pets on-site.

  • 70% of the pets left behind are abused or killed in retaliation.

  • Pets are family! 70 out of every 100 households own a pet.

71% of mental health patients needing life-saving services DECLINED them because they DID NOT have a temporary home for their Pet.

Approximately 6.5 million companion animals are surrendered to animal shelters annually, and the pet owner’s housing situation is the most prevalent reason for a dog being surrendered.

Found Pet Resources

Naperville Area Humane Society (NAHS) is not an animal control nor a law enforcement agency. In accordance with Illinois state laws, the Naperville Area Humane Society cannot accept stray animals. We are happy to provide information and guidance to those who have found an animal.

To ensure a reunion with the owner, it is vital that a found animal is taken to the animal control responsible for the area where the animal was found. If you decide to hold the animal at your home, please call the appropriate animal control to complete a Found Report. (Please be aware that many animal controls will consider you the animal's owner after the animal has been in your possession for a certain amount of time.) If you need assistance with a found animal, please use these general guidelines:

  • If the animal is found in an unincorporated part of the county, please call the animal control office in that county.

  • If the animal is found within city limits, please call the number for non-emergency police.*

* Please note that some cities have a separate animal control department including AuroraBolingbrookJoliet, and Naperville.

For complete information on stray animal policies and procedures, please contact the appropriate animal control. Click here for contact information for local animal control facilities and non-emergency police departments in DuPage County.

There are several options for pet owners seeking low-cost spay/neuter services or low-cost vaccinations for their pets. The information below is provided as a resource, and the Naperville Area Humane Society does not endorse one program over another. Please contact each organization for the qualifications and limitations of its program.

Pet Food Pantries

A few area food pantries also have pet food available for residents needing assistance. The information below is provided as a resource, and the Naperville Area Humane Society does not endorse one program over another. Please contact each organization for the qualifications and limitations of its program.

Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR)

Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) is a full management plan in which stray and feral cats already living outdoors in cities, towns, and rural areas are humanely trapped, then evaluated, vaccinated, and sterilized by veterinarians. Kittens and friendly cats are adopted into good homes through area shelters. Healthy adult cats unsocialized to humans are returned to their familiar habitat under the lifelong care of volunteers who act as their caretakers.

Feral Fixers is an organization dedicated to practicing and promoting Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) in DuPage County, Illinois. If you have free-roaming cats in your neighborhood, please contact Feral Fixers for more information and assistance.
